Cafe Du Nord - San Francisco, CA
Jesus H. Christ...the boys from Oh My God are simply stunning. It's obvious they've been on a solid tour schedule, cuz they were so darned tight! For those of you not in the know yet, Oh My God is a fiercely energetic trio from Chicago. They're like a modern day Doors with less lounge, twice as much groove and equal amounts of stage theatrics....the lead dude, Billy, even sports a full beard these days. Never you mind about the Doors comparision, though. These cats could stand on their own any day. Iguana plays the distorted organ like he's trying to close an overstuffed suitcase. Nearly pouncing on iit to get the most leverage out of his ten fingers. But the wall of gorgeous fire that comes out of that thing...
Brandon on drums has got all the power you'd expect out of the latest Warped Tour heavy hitter, but is so thoughtful on what and when he decides to hit, and is so dead on weather playing mind numbing fills, or sparse one-off cymbal ticks that you can tell, the boy brings the band to a whole new level.
And Billy. Oh yes, can't forget the frontman/bassist. Billy is one of those cats you just can't take your eyes off of when he's on stage. He plays the crowd perfectly, without ever seeming to care if anyone's watching or not. He speaks poetic, he yelps, he does backward rockstar kicks, and pours his soul into every second.
The sound is dark groovy grunge one minute, then they lapse into these instrumental sections that are one part broadway musical (think Jesus Christ Superstar), and one part indie heart-string pullin', while making you want to cry and sway, just before kickin' you ass again to groove it out 'til the end.
Ok, have I said enough?
Go check 'em out. They tour all the time, so find them in your home town. Go see them, and for god's sake girls...buy a t-shirt! Their's are the best fitting girly shirts around.
We had a fun set too. Though late on Monday night is not exactly prime time for bands. Either way, we were super jazzed to be playing the Du Nord. Such a beautiful spot. Thanks for everyone who came out and stayed late with us.
