VARIETY PACK!! - El Rio - San Francisco, CA
I think this was one of the more successful VARIETY PACK!! shows that Clevergirl, Karen's other band has put together. They combine humor, music and bizarre stuff to create shows with a good vibe, no attitude and fun for audience and performers alike.
That night we had the odd little band Surprise Party open up. If you don't know about these guys, you will. They do 15 minute sets, always different themes, different music, with lots of twisted humor, costume changes, sometimes subtle nudity and wigs. And to Mark's embarrassment, Karen plays keyboards in this group. But she need to get out her quirks somewhere...
This time they did a 15 minute musical synopsis of Marlo's Thomas' famous play Free to be You and Me. People we're shocked and awed.
Then Peluka came in and switched gears completely. They are a beautiful indie pop band with lush guitar and violin work, soaringly sad vocals and a new bass player names Greg Moynihan!!! (greg is responsible for some of the fantastic photography you'll see in the rest of the B.E. gallery.)
After that, they had Mr. Stinky and Tom Byrne both doing their crowd pleasing/confounding performance art? Yes, we had the sheep brothers and sisters join us again for this one. It was lovely. And Tom had blender tricks, talk-to-tv moments, sound effects, bad jokes and more. It was twisted and sweet.
Then we went on. It was a great spot, a great night, the sound system was up to par from the last time we did El Rio, and it made all the difference. Lots of funnnnnnn.....
The Two Gallants rode out the night...and we love them....and they're great...and they're awesome....and you should see them as much as possible....
Thanks for everyone who came out to see the show and help support Karen and her booking efforts. Thanks for playing and watching and drinking.
And a special extra thank you to the El Rio for being so cool. We really like playing there.
