The Balazo Badlands Gallery - San Francisco, CA
This place harkens back to the wee beginnings of Beautiful Engines. Actually when BE was just a glint in Mark and Karen's eyes, and they were still a three piece called jimmyjack, they played this independent art gallery in the mission. It wasn't so great. They had just seen a HUGE show there a few weeks back, and thought, "damn, we wanna play here!!". But what they didn't know is that the band they saw actually had a following and a draw. jimmyjack, as they learned the hard way, did not.
So not much has changed in a few years, but they did manage to get some friends to come this time, and the other bands did too, and on display in the gallery was a huge exhibit on UNDERWEAR. So add those things together, and they actually had a good sized crowd to play for. Very cool.
The only thing they sort of did wrong that evening is underestimate the amount of audience. Instead, they took their somewhat weak history at Balazo, and said, "well, if no one is gonna be here, we may as well have some tequila before we play". Actually Mark said that. Karen was sick that night.
But as everyone knows, it don't take much to convince Karen to have a sho. Sick or not. Especially when everyone else is doing it, and they're saying things like "come on, don't be a wus. Everyone is doing it!" So they both threw a couple back, and were feeling mightly loose. They cracked into some tunes, the tequila started swimming through the veins, they opened their eyes, and BOOM, there were lots of people in the room watching. Hmmm......It felt good, but maybe ONE shot would've sufficed.
Or MAYBE, the tequila DREW the people in. Like a moth to the flame. It WAS in the Mission after all. Coincidenc???
So anyway, it was fun and we got to play with our friends Colossal Youth (it was their first real gig in a real club!), and the pure awesome county punksters The Hazardous Dukes!! Thanks to Sarah, Heidi, Sheila, Renee, Geno, Magie, Sue and Richard for being there with us. Hope ya had a good time.
